Pina Bausch, founder of the renowned contemporary dance company Tanztheater Wuppertal, was a German dancer and choreographer considered a central figure in dance theatre. Shortly after her untimely death in 2009, her friend Wim Wenders directed Pina as a tribute.
Far from a hagiographic biography, the director of Wings of Desire seeks to capture the essence of the choreographer's art, offering a resolutely original film in which film archives of Pina Bausch alternate with voice-over interviews with the dancers she worked with, as well as excerpts from several of her pieces, which her company re-enacted for Wenders' camera.
The use of 3D and the German director's particularly cinematic mise-en-scène (construction of space with depth, close-ups, eyes to camera…) create a strong sense of immersion, placing the viewer as close as possible to the dancers in a unique sensory experience.
With Pina, Wenders transcends the genres of documentary and filmed performance to create a highly personal film that is moving in its sincerity and captures the uniqueness of Pina Bausch's work.
